Medicine Hat 2025-26 budget deliberations get underway

Deliberations for the City of Medicine Hat’s next two-year budget got underway at council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting Tuesday as staff introduced the broad concepts to the city’s elected representatives.

The theme of the budget is “balancing the needs of today with the requirements of tomorrow”. Council is required to approve a budget by December.

Accounting supervisor Aaron Hoimyr said some of the main challenges that Medicine Hat faces include high inflation, aging infrastructure, stagnant population growth and declining revenues.

What loomed large over the discussion and will have an impact going forward is Medicine Hat’s energy revenues amid a national clean energy transition.

Council’s next budget meeting will focus on discussing the capital budget and take place June 25. Budget approval is scheduled for Dec. 2.
